Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia)

The snow leopard, also known as the "ghost of the mountains," is a rare and majestic big cat found in the high-altitude regions of Central and South Asia. With its thick fur, long tail, and powerful legs, it is perfectly adapted to life in harsh, snowy environments. Unfortunately, snow leopards are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and conflicts with local herders.

In zoos, snow leopards live in specially designed enclosures that mimic their natural mountain habitat, featuring rocky terrain, climbing structures, and shaded areas to regulate temperature. Their diet is carefully managed to replicate their natural intake of high-protein prey. Enrichment activities such as hidden food, climbing challenges, and playtime keep these solitary cats mentally and physically stimulated. Snow leopards in zoos are part of international breeding programs, ensuring genetic diversity and raising awareness about their plight in the wild.
